More on the Wellses, Woods, and Luetchfords of Kent, UK. You can click on some of the pictures for a hi-res Mac "PICT" file of the same.

Young Phebe Wells, wife of Stephen, b.1817 Orpington, Kent. I have messed with the color & contrast to make it clearer, because the original is so faded. The right picture is of the reverse of the original. I make the assumption as to the subject because of Philip S. Wells' handwriting saying "Phil's Grandma Wells" and because of Evon P. Wells' handwriting saying "Evon's Great Grandmother".

Does anyone know what the 5 characters above "This negative is", and the one by itself farther right, mean?

Judging by the writing on the reverse, by Evon and Philip S. Wells, this would also be Phebe Wells. In 1841, she would have been about 24 which sure doesn't seem to agree with the face. Therefore, either the person who wrote 1841 was wrong or both my Dad and his Dad were wrong and this is actually one grandmother farther back. (That COULD be saying "Phil's G Grandmother Wells" which would make it Ann Packman Wells b. ~ 1760). OH, for a first or maiden name, fellas!

The back of this card says (possibly) "COTTAGE / 92" (White House is sometimes referred to as White Cottage and /92 could be 1892?) . Then Evon wrote "Grandfather Wells", so this would be Philip Wells (husband of Sarah), b.1850  d.1924. The COOPER reference is to Frank and Jane Wells Cooper (Philip Wells' sister). Sevenoaks is the largest town close to Knockholt, Kent, and is where my cousin Ann lives.
